Internet and Assisted Technology for Elementary School Children
Due to the success of the internet, there are many websites available that teach and reinforce the fundamental skills of reading and mathematics. They are presented in fun ways that engage children. Children learn how to use technology to practice and enhance their academic skills. They can play on-line games, listen to stories, print worksheets and flashcards, practice spelling and phonemic awareness. The internet and technology have also been especially useful in helping children with special needs.
Technology has made it possible for children with various learning disabilities to become more independent in their academic lives. There are many kinds of software available to schools and school boards that can help a student complete homework assignments and reports. There is a software program called WordQ. It has many useful functions. It enables the student to speak into a microphone (attached to a PC) and the words are presented on the screen as they are spoken. It also allows the student to highlight articles and information from text books. The highlighted information is read aloud to the student. These programs enable children to play a greater role in everyday activities because they are not limited by their special need. Children who were once limited by weak processing skills or poor visual memory can now write essays and reports. They are introduced to software that can organize their ideas into mind maps.
In order for students to receive computer equipment from their school board they have to be identified through a formal process. Usually when a child is “identified” as having a learning disability, that requires computer equipment, there is a claim established for assisted technology. This is organized by the school. The equipment is ordered and sent to the school. The student (along with parents and teacher) are set-up with a trainer (appointed by the school board) to learn about the software and how it can be used. The students are given unlimited access to the equipment at school. They are also given access to the software (provided they have their own computer) at home.
Everyday more children are being diagnosed with learning disabilities. They are being equipped with an Individual Education Plan (IEP) by their school. This document provides details about the student’s strengths and needs. Any accommodations and/or modifications are outlined in this document. If any assisted technology and/or software is required for this student, then it is listed in the IEP. It is always beneficial for teachers to read the IEP of a new student in order to become familiar with that student and their specific needs.
As mentioned before technology and the internet are enabling students to strive for academic success where they were once deemed unsuccessful. There is a wide range of learning disabilities. There is a software program available which enables a student to dictate their words. It is called Dragon Naturally Speaking. Also the internet can be used as a great resource for students and/or teachers to obtain graphic organizers. These organizers are useful in helping students organize their ideas before writing a story or report. One website that I recommend for practicing phonemic awareness and reading is www.starfall.com. Another useful website for practicing various academic skills (all subjects) is www.linktolearning.com.
